What to do right now
First aid for the next hour. Then call.
- Knocked-out adult toothPick it up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline, not tap water, and do not scrub it. Put it back in the socket if you can and bite gently on a cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk and come straight in. More on knocked-out teeth.
- Broken or chipped toothSave any pieces in milk. Rinse with warm water, use cold on the outside of the face for swelling, and avoid chewing on that side. Sharp edges can be smoothed the same day.
- Swollen face or a bad tasteThis is usually infection and it does not resolve on its own. Do not wait it out over a weekend. See abscessed tooth.
- Lost crown or fillingKeep the crown. Do not glue it with household adhesive. Cover the tooth with dental cement from a pharmacy if it is sharp, and call.
- Something stuck between teethFloss gently. Never use a pin, a knife or anything metal, the damage from that is usually worse than the original problem.
- Bleeding after an extractionBite firmly on rolled gauze for 20 minutes without checking it. If it keeps going, call us.
Pain relief while you wait to be seen
- Cold on the outside of the face, 20 minutes on and 20 off, for swelling and bruising.
- Ordinary painkillers taken as directed on the packet. Never hold aspirin against the gum. It burns the tissue.
- Sleep propped up. Lying flat increases the throbbing in an inflamed tooth.
- Warm salt-water rinses for gum irritation, and keep brushing the rest of the mouth normally.
- Do not apply heat to a swollen face. It encourages the infection to spread.

Are you open 24 hours?
No, and we will not pretend to be. Our office hours are Monday to Friday. You can request an emergency appointment on this page at any hour and the team calls you back first thing. For breathing or swallowing trouble, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious facial injury, go to an emergency room or call 911.
How quickly can I be seen?
We hold time for emergencies. When the schedule allows, you are offered the same day. Call first so we can prepare.

How much does it cost?
We examine first and give you the cost before any treatment starts. Financing options are available.
What counts as a real emergency?
Uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out permanent tooth, facial swelling, or pain you cannot manage. If you are unsure, call and describe it.
Will the pain just go away?
Sometimes it does, and that is the dangerous part. Pain stopping can mean the nerve has died, while the infection carries on quietly. Get it looked at either way.
Can a knocked-out tooth really be saved?
Often, yes, if it is replanted quickly. The cells on the root surface start dying within about half an hour out of the mouth, which is why milk matters and tap water does not.
What about a child’s baby tooth that was knocked out?
Do not put a baby tooth back in. It can damage the adult tooth forming above it. Call us and bring your child in.
