Additional dental services
These are the treatments that do not fit neatly under family or cosmetic dentistry, but come up constantly in practice. Most of them exist to keep a tooth rather than replace it, which is nearly always the cheaper outcome over a lifetime.
Everything on this page is done in our Brighton Way office by the same team, so nothing is referred out unless referring you out is genuinely the better answer.
Book if any of these apply
- A tooth has broken, or an old filling has cracked or fallen out
- Something aches with hot or cold and the ache lingers after the drink is gone
- You wake with a sore jaw or a headache, or someone has told you that you grind
- Bad breath has not responded to brushing, flossing and mouthwash
- You have been told you need several things done and want them sequenced into one plan
What we treat
Each of these has its own page with what the appointment involves, what it costs you in time, and what the alternatives are.
Fillings and cavities
The most common repair we do. Caught early, a cavity is one visit and a small filling. Left alone, the same tooth becomes a root canal and a crown. Nothing else on this list rewards early treatment as much.
Crowns and bridges
A crown rebuilds a tooth that is cracked or mostly filling and can no longer hold itself together. A bridge replaces a missing tooth using the two either side as anchors, which means preparing two healthy teeth, so we compare it with an implant first.
Inlays and onlays
The middle ground between a filling and a crown. When the damage is too large for a filling but the tooth does not need covering completely, an onlay repairs the broken part and leaves the healthy structure alone.
Root canal treatment
Removes the infected nerve so the tooth itself can stay. It has an unfair reputation: with modern anesthetic the appointment feels much like having a deep filling. The alternative is losing the tooth.
Sealants
A thin coating over the grooves of back teeth, where brushing cannot reach the bottom. Painless, no drilling, no anesthetic, done in minutes. Most useful on children shortly after the adult molars arrive.
Night guards and sport guards
A custom guard does not stop you grinding. Nothing does. It gives the grinding something to wear through other than your teeth. For sport, a fitted guard protects in a way a boil-and-bite one does not.
Bad breath treatment
Persistent bad breath is a symptom, not a hygiene failure. Most of it starts on the tongue or under the gums; some of it starts in the sinuses, the stomach or a medication. We find which before recommending anything.
Dental CT scanning
A three-dimensional scan taken in the office when a flat X-ray is not enough. Planning an implant, locating a buried wisdom tooth, or finding the source of pain a normal film cannot explain.
Full mouth reconstruction
For when several problems have accumulated and treating them one at a time no longer makes sense. Everything is planned together, sequenced, costed in writing, and usually staged over months rather than done at once.
How we sequence it when there is more than one thing
Most people who land on this page need two or three of the above rather than one. The order is not arbitrary.
- Anything painful or infectedPain and infection are treated first, whatever else is on the list. Nothing is gained by planning around a tooth that is actively getting worse.
- The foundationGum inflammation and active decay are stabilized next. Crowns, onlays and bridges built onto an unstable foundation fail early and the work is wasted.
- The structural repairsFillings, onlays, crowns and root canals, in the order that keeps the most tooth. We tell you what each one costs in time and money before starting.
- The protective workSealants and a night guard come last, because their job is to protect what has just been rebuilt.
What it costs and what insurance covers
Restorative treatment on this page is usually covered at least in part, unlike cosmetic work. We check your plan before you commit and give you the numbers in writing, including what your insurance is likely to leave you paying. If the total is uncomfortable, ask about financing. Staging treatment over several months is normal and does no harm to the outcome when it is sequenced properly.
Can these be combined into fewer appointments?
Often yes. If you would rather have more done per visit, say so at the consultation and we will plan longer appointments. Some combinations are better split for healing reasons, and we will explain which.
Do I have to do everything you recommend?
No. You get a plan with what is urgent, what is advisable and what can wait, clearly separated. Plenty of patients work through it over a year or more.
What if I have not been to a dentist in years?
That is a very common reason people book. Nobody is lectured. We look, tell you honestly what we find, and start with whatever is causing trouble.
Is a second opinion welcome?
Yes. Bring the plan and any X-rays you have. If we agree with the other practice we will tell you that too.
